My very first New York Fashion Week! You’ve heard about the thrill and buzz of “fashion week in The Devil Wears Prada”, but to actually experience it… that’s pretty surreal! Michael Kors sent me off to New York a few weeks back to catch their FW18 runway live, and to meet Michael himself!
The festivities started the night before the show, where we gathered for a press dinner at organic restaurant ABC Kitchen with editors and influencers from the region. I sat with my lovely friends Laureen and Nicole from Philippines, and while I wished I had more energy to go for after-dinner drinks and a little bit of fun and dance, I had to prepare for an early start the next morning.
Fast-forward to 7am, and we had to be at the hotel lobby for our car ride to Lincoln Centre, where I was scheduled to interview Michael Kors himself before the show at 10am. To read more about my day in detail, I spoke to Harper’s Bazaar’s Associate Fashion News Editor Gerald Tan candidly, and you can read the article here!
We only had less than 5 minutes with him, just enough time for a group photo, a selfie, and 2 quick questions! We talked about the upcoming collection and how the new designs cater to every girl in every shape, size, age, and style. It really did come through during the runway: there were Chinese, African-American, Caucasian models, and you had personalities like Ashley Graham, Bella Hadid, and Adwoa Aboah fronting key looks too. All in all, a refreshing runway that spoke to the everyday fashion-forward woman.
Camo prints, striking plaid patterns, and leopard accents were the highlights from the runway. It’s all about print-blocking for the upcoming season: you can pair striped tops with plaid bottoms, floral dresses with striking plaid coats, or even a black sequined blazer with plaid bell-bottom trousers. There were also iconic Audrey-Hepburn-esque black party dresses that I wish I had!
Post-show, we had a quick outfit change and headed to the Michael Kors office for a re-see, where you get to see and feel the runway looks up-close. There are so many pieces I wish I could be stocked in our Singapore storeds, but alas, the collection is only available online and in selected cities. At least there’s international shipping options!
Thanks team Michael Kors for a wonderful, welcoming stay in New York, look out for my next post, where I share my top travel picks and destinations to go to in NYC!
