We were introduced to Anessa’s Perfect UV Sunscreen last week at a media event,
read more about our take on the sunscreen below!

SUNSCREEN IS IMPORTANT, FRIENDS. (Ahem) Okay, I’m sure you can tell that I’m slightly passionate about this subject. I’m sure everyone has heard their parents (or aunties) nag them about the importance of applying sunscreen to protect their skin from pigmentation, aging, and in some extreme cases, cancer. Yet, so few of us actually wear it regularly, mostly because we’re lazy or just hate that sticky oily feeling on our faces. So, for anyone who has been living with a mild sense of guilt for not wearing sunscreen, I’ve written this article compiling the best sunscreens for every occasion that will look and feel great on your skin so you have no more excuses to skip sun-care!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a bit of a sunscreen addict. I’m that irritating mom-friend who will nag at you about vegetables, skincare, and safety. (Shilin complains about this frequently) Not only have I nagged gently cajoled most of my friends into wearing sunscreen, I even regularly remind them to reapply it ever so often when we go out.

Here’s my tragic backstory: I’ve been sunscreen-obsessed ever since I realised that my family has a history of hyper-pigmentation, and also since I was a toddler silently freaking out and worrying that the freckles on my body were some sort of a skin disease.

A (un)healthy amount of research later, I learned all about the best sunscreens, and the proper way to apply them, and the proper amount to apply for the best sun protection! Here are some guidelines: First of all, you need to apply a quarter teaspoon amount to your face and neck for every application. Secondly, no matter what the SPF is on your sunscreen, you have to reapply your sunscreen every 3 hours! This is because Singapore is really hot and your sunscreen will most likely wear off at the 3-hour mark, so if you want full coverage throughout your day, reapply constantly! Thirdly, continue reading this article to find out the best sunscreens for your needs!

1. BEST FOR HOT AND HUMID WEATHER: Anessa Perfect UV Aqua Booster Sunscreen

In hot and humid Singapore, as much as I wish it were possible, it’s impossible to stay in an air-conditioned environment 24/7. This Anessa sunscreen amazed me with its staying power, staying put even though I (TMI) perspire like a waterfall. It’s endless, it’s unstoppable, it’s also nowhere near as majestic as a waterfall so this analogy isn’t that great… Back to the important part; unlike other sunscreens that become less effective when in contact or exposure to water (or water particles in the air), the Anessa Perfect UV Aqua Booster Sunscreen contains the revolutionary technology Aqua Booster EX, that actually causes the sunscreen to “re-calibrate” its UV protection properties, and evens out on your skin when water touches it! Of course, a paranoid person like me would still reapply my sunscreen every 3 hours anyway, but having a sunscreen like this that is so resistant to water takes a load off my mind!

2. BEST HYPO-ALLERGENIC SUNSCREEN: La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Anti-Shine

La Roche-Posay is renowned for producing some of the best sunscreens in the market, and for good reason. This one is my absolute holy grail sunscreen for my body because it comes in a dry-touch gel cream that’s super comfortable to wear! They also have a wide range of sunscreens that come in different finishes for different skin types and needs, and are hypo-allergenic so they’re great for anyone with sensitive skin!

3. BEST FOR APPLYING SUNSCREEN EVENLY ON-THE-GO: Supergoop! Super Power Sunscreen Mousse Broad Spectrum SPF50

You’ve seen liquid, cream, and spray, but have you seen a sunscreen mousse? Supergoop!’s innovative technology allows you to apply your sunscreen super quickly and evenly with ease wherever you are! It also melts into your skin quickly so you don’t get that heavy, sticky feeling that some sunscreens give you.

4. BEST CITY DEFENCES: Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution SPF50 PA+++

This sunscreen was personally recommended by my mum for its anti-pollution properties, which is essential in an urban city like Singapore! It’s mineral-based so it doesn’t contain chemicals which might react with sensitive skin, and my mum really loves this sunscreen’s light feel and radiance-boosting properties!

For the longest time, I did not apply sunscreen on my lips. I mean, who would think lips need protection against the sun as well?! But did you know, our lips are some of the most delicate areas of the face and the skin there needs just as much if not more protection than the rest. I like that this lip treatment hydrates my lips and also comes in a range of tints for an extra pop of colour!

6. BEST SUNSCREEN AND PRIMER COMBINED: NARS Smooth & Protect Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen

For those of you who already have too many steps in their makeup routine, this one is for you! NARS combined a makeup primer with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to produce a multi-functional product that will keep your makeup in place all day and your skin UV-free! (Andrea: I’m definitely checking this out!)

7. BEST FOR TOUCHING UP OVER MAKEUP: Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen SPF50

I know some people who refuse to reapply their sunscreen because it could potentially ruin their makeup. If that’s the case, this Colorescience sunscreen is perfect for you! The sunscreen comes in a powder form with a built-in brush so that you can powder your face halfway in the day while also renewing your sunscreen layer! It even comes in 4 shades to suit a range of skin tones.

8. BEST LUXURY SKINCARE SUNSCREEN: Sisley Super Soin Solaire Facial Sun Care SPF 30

For those who can afford a bit of a splurge, this Sisley sunscreen goes beyond just offering sun protection. Not only does it protect your skin from sun damage, it also contains great active ingredients like Edelweiss extract to fight premature signs of aging and reverse the damaging effects of the sun!

I hope I managed to nag convince some more of you to start wearing sunscreen! If you don’t like conventional sunscreens, give these a whirl. I promise that your skin(and mum) will thank you for it!

With lots of love and even more nagging,
