Everyone has some makeup hacks up their sleeve, and some can even be as absurd as using hairspray to set makeup (we wouldn’t recommend that). Putting all the wacky and wild hacks aside, there are actually some pretty genius ones worth working into your routine!

So today, I’ll be sharing some simple tried and tested makeup hacks that will definitely bring your makeup game to a whole new level.

Oily T-zone Makeup Fix

With Singapore’s humid weather, feeling oily and greasy at the end of the day is almost inevitable. But having already oily skin on top of Singapore’s insane weather is a recipe for makeup disaster!

If you experience the same problem as I do, try this simple hack:
Before applying foundation, work a thin layer of eyeshadow primer onto your T-zone. Set the primer with a setting spray and go about your usual makeup routine after. The primer will act as an oil-absorbent layer, which will be masked under the setting spray, thus reducing its oily appearance.

After trying out this hack, I noticed that my T-zone stayed matte for a much longer period of time. Of course, this hack would be more effective for people who are blessed with less oily skin.

Green Tea Bags to Moisturise Your Lips

I hate it when my lips get dry and chapped, especially when I visit countries with cold climates. Balms are an easy cure, but it’s much more effective to keep our lips hydrated in order to prevent them from chapping in the first place.

If you ever experience dry and cracked lips, here’s an affordable and easy hack for you. Take a green tea bag, dip it into some hot water. Squeeze out some hot water (don’t burn yourself!) and place the bag onto your lips for about 5 to 10 minutes. Green tea is rich in antioxidants and will help soothe and moisturise your lips naturally.

If you regularly suffer from dry lips, think about taking a step back from long-wear lip stains and inks as they could be drying your lips out, and irritating the cracked surfaces! Instead,  opt for something mild on the lips like Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Colour Bold Liquid Lip Gloss. It has a non-sticky and ultra lightweight formula filled with vibrant pigments, which will elevate the plump look of your lips while leaving them soft and moisturised too.

Warm Up Your Mascara

Having clumpy lashes after applying mascara is one of my biggest pet peeves and can ruin a potentially flawless look! I used to desperately brush out clumps to try to salvage my lashes but it just wasted time and precious mascara.

Fortunately, I recently found a really cool trick on Pinterest, which suggested blow drying your mascara tube for a few seconds or dipping it in a cup of warm water (closed and lid side up).

This will prevent your mascara from clumping by improving its consistency, making it smoother and less sticky, enabling easy application. Furthermore, this can also help your mascara tube last longer as the heat melts any dried up product, preventing any wastage!

Long-Lasting Eyebrow Hack

Filling in my eyebrows is the most essential part of my makeup routine as my brows are really sparse. But as the day goes on and my face gets oilier, my brows are always at risk of smudging, which isn’t cute.

If any of you out there can relate, I’m so excited to share this hack! All you have to do is swipe a thin layer of eyeshadow primer through your brows before filling them in. Let it dry, and then apply the brow product of your choice! Not only does this help brow product stay on throughout the day, it also allows easier application of your brow products after.

Applying Setting Powder After Lipstick

This process may seem a little extra, but the results are definitely worth it! After applying the lipstick of your desired shade, peel off a ply of a tissue so you get one ply of paper. Gently hold it against your lips and apply translucent setting powder over the tissue and lips with a brush. Not only does this trick give your lipstick a matte finish, it makes it last much longer.

Alternatively, if that seems like too much of a hassle for you, we recommend Burberry’s Lip Velvet Crush. This range of lipsticks comes in 12 different shades and promises to deliver pigmented colours with a matte finish. It also lasts up to 8 hours with no feathering!

Skin Icing to Prime your Face

Skin icing has become an almost daily routine for me. Not only does it help to cool down the skin, it also reduces the puffiness in the eyes, improves blood circulation in the face, and most importantly, it tightens your pores, acting as an excellent primer for the skin!

Wrap an ice cube in a dry cloth and gently massage the ice cube all around your face till your skin feels nice and smooth (I usually do this until almost ¾ of the ice cube melts). This hack may get a little messy as water from the ice drips so be sure to get another dry cloth or some tissue paper to wipe your face as and when!

Set Makeup With Damp Beauty Blender

The Beauty Blender is my favourite makeup tool because it’s so versatile — you can use it for your foundation, highlight, and even set your makeup seamlessly!

But here’s another nifty way to use your Beauty Blender: after you’re done setting your face with setting powder, dab your damp beauty blender all over your face to really press the product into your skin. This will give you a smooth finish, making your makeup look natural rather than cakey.

5-Minute Monochrome Makeup Look

This hack is a lifesaver that will have you ready for the day in 5 minutes or less! Achieving a monochrome look is simple. All you have to do is use the same shade on your lids, cheeks and lips. For this, I love to use moisturising lipsticks with a balmy consistency because it’s easy on the eyes, but also adds a natural looking highlight when applied to your cheeks!

Just pick your colour for the day, and use your ring finger to lightly dab the product over your lids, cheeks and lips. It should glide on seamlessly, and requires practically no blending! One of my current favourite lipsticks to use is the Marc Jacob’s Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick because it’s high-shine and extremely pigmented, without all the stickiness of a gloss.
