Shanghai With Clinique

Rain, shine, or typhoon, the show must go on! This was the mantra of the Clinique team last week when we were invited to Shanghai by Clinique for the launch event of their newest Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly (DDHJ) moisturiser, just hours after Typhoon Rumbia made landfall in Shanghai!

The latest addition to the highly-raved Dramatically Different series is the first of its kind. This completely clear moisturiser has a light, jelly-like texture and anti-pollution properties, which made the highly industrial city of Shanghai the perfect place to celebrate its launch.

Our stay at EDITION

We were fortunate enough to set up camp at EDITION, which happens to be Drea’s favourite hotel chain because they have a distinct scent (created especially for them by Le Labo) which she’s proclaimed herself obsessed with. This particular branch was located close to The Bund, so we were treated to a great view of the signature Shanghai skyline from our rooms.

Our day started with a welcome lunch hosted at EDITION’s Canton Disco, where we met with the Clinique Travel Retail team as well as other influencers from countries all around the Asian Pacific Region such as China, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar and more!

The launch event

After filling our bellies and getting to know everyone, we made our way to the launch event, which was held just a few minutes away from our hotel at the Shanghai Gallery of Art. Inspired by the location, Clinique designed the event like an art installation, with great emphasis on how pollution is a problem that affects us worldwide.

The installations included videos showing the pollution in cities around the world, an interactive hallway that lit up with the air quality of major cities as you walked through it, and, my personal favourite, a room designed to look as if you were underwater!

This all led up to the main event: a presentation by Vivian Wang, Clinique’s China National Education Director herself! Vivian first taught us about various types of environmental aggressors, and why we should care about them.

Learning about pollution

Our skin is constantly exposed to external aggressors, be it from the air, water pollution or sun damage. This can cause skin issues like lack of moisture, rough texture and less supple skin. Over time, chronic pollution and sun damage can also cause wrinkles and even premature ageing!

This may sound bad, but it’s even worse when you realise that there is literally nowhere to run from pollution. While Singapore has moderate air pollution, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that more than 90% of the world is breathing in the highly polluted air! Frequent travellers are especially at risk from pollution, either from fume events onboard or from poor air quality at the destinations.

Formulating the new Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly

During the formulation of this new moisturiser, Clinique conducted numerous consumer interviews to find out what consumers looked for in a skincare product.

They discovered that consumers look for skincare that is simple and effective, lightweight but long-lasting, and able to protect their skin from environmental assaults.

The new DDHJ manages to fulfil all these claims, boasting a lightweight, oil-free texture and 24-hour hydration repair with pollution protection.

Treating and protecting your skin

On the hydration side, the DDHJ contains a Moisture Barrier Blend to help build back the skin’s protective moisture barrier over time! Two key ingredients in this blend are:

  1. Hyaluronic acid, which provides instant moisture to the skin and keeps it plump and refreshed over 24 hours, and
  2. Glycerine, a humectant that attracts water to the skin and makes it supple.

For pollution protection, Clinique introduced their new Clean Shield TechnologyTM, proven to make skin 87% less vulnerable to pollution! It has been formulated with sunflower seed cake, barley extract, cucumber fruit extract to strengthen the skin barrier and improve its ability to retain moisture over time.

Again, hyaluronic acid also plays a part here as it has antioxidant properties that allow it to act as a shield for our skin against external aggressors.

Finally, Vivian explained the differences between each Dramatically Different moisturiser.

  1. Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion+:  A silky lotion meant for very dry to dry combination skin.
  2. Dramatically Different Oil-Control Gel (renamed from Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel): An oil-free gel meant for combination oily to oily skin.
  3. Dramatically Different Hydration Jelly Anti-Pollution: The newest in the collection, this is a lightweight oil-free water-jelly meant for all skin types.

Winding Down At Wine And Dine Bar

After the presentation, we were led up to the rooftop where, by a stroke of luck, the weather had cleared up and we were treated to an amazing view of Shanghai’s iconic skyline!

As we relaxed with some drinks and delicious bar food, we got to enjoy the refreshing breeze paired with the lovely sunset over Shanghai city—a perfect end to an amazing trip!

We’d also like to share a bit of good news for all travellers! Shilla Duty-Free is currently having a Changi Exclusive promotion: Buy a full-sized DDHJ and receive a 30ml tube of Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion+ for free! Promotion is ongoing while stocks last.

And of course, we’d like to give a big thanks to Clinique for having us on this fun and eye-opening trip. We can’t wait to share more of our travels with you, so stay protected, and we’ll be back with more soon!
