Sunblock And SPF Tips

We talk about SPF extensively–and I mean extensively. So if your mother hasn’t already given you the rundown about why you should be slathering this all over your skin, here’s a recap.

Sun protection is your first and most important step in your fight against premature aging and damaged skin tissue. We’re talking hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines and in worst cases–skin cancer. But don’t be fooled, the SPF game is trickier than it seems.

So before you pick out your next SPF product, or reach for that morning slather of sunscreen, here are some SPF secrets to remember!

SPF Eye Cream

In my morning rush to get my face on before I’m out the door, I apply SPF in one quick, haphazard swoop. But one important spot I–along with many–forget to pay special attention to is the eyes!

The skin around our eyes is especially thin and delicate, making it the most prone to wrinkles, sun spots, and premature aging from sun damage. In fact, 10% of skin cancer occurs in this small area! So if you think you’re too “young” to start worrying about eye creams and serums, think again.

Supergoop’s Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream with oat peptides is our top SPF eye cream pick for its instant and long-term benefits. The broad spectrum anti-aging eye cream hydrates and softens the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines, while preventing fine lines, dark circles and sagging under the eyes! It’s an instant pick-me-up for your eyes as well as a long-term anti-aging treatment.

Vitamin C Support

Now, I’m sorry to inform you that SPF alone won’t do the trick these days. While many of us measure the effects of the sun from how burnt we get on an especially sunny day, that’s just the half of it–the UVB half.

With UVA rays, a lot of the damage happens in the long term. This is where most of the damage to collagen, elastin and your skin cells occur. TLDR UVA rays age you a ton and is the top cause for premature aging and wrinkles!

Studies have shown that combining Vitamin C with a broad spectrum sunscreen maximises protection against environmental and sun damage. So for that extra line of defence, a good dose of Vitamin C will back your SPF up.

The powerhouse antioxidant may help give your skin that extra bit of protection it needs, but remember you still can’t skimp on the SPF. We recommend layering a Vitamin C serum under your sunscreen for best results–more specifically Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Day Serum. On top of protecting your skin, the serum treats damaged skin tissue to restore that bright, even and firm complexion we yearn for.

SPF Lip Balm

If you, like me, are a member of the sisterhood of the perpetually chapped lips–there’s hope for you yet. Lip scrubs and uber hydrating balms aren’t the answers to your prayers my friends: it’s SPF.

Many of us assume our glosses and lipsticks provide adequate protection from the sun, but they actually make things way worse. Shiny, glossy sheen in most of our lip products actually attracts sunlight and with it, harmful UV radiation.

Applying your facial sunscreen to your lips might seem like a straightforward solution, but may cause irritation to those with more sensitive skin. Instead, go with an SPF that’s been formulated to protect and treat your lips. We love Supergoop’s SPF 30 broad spectrum Lip Balm that also contains Vitamin E to moisturise, heal and protect your lips from environmental aggressors!

SPF Sprays

Personally speaking, I love SPF sprays. They make the perfect midday sunscreen top-up, and can double up as setting sprays as well! But here’s the catch: aerosol sprays contain tons of alcohol. This breaks down the photostability of your sunscreen, making it ineffective in protecting you from the sun! On top of that, alcohol dries out your skin, which is exactly what we’re trying to avoid.

This doesn’t mean you have to avoid SPF sprays like the plague. Just be sure to read your ingredient labels before making any purchases and stay away from any SPFs that have alcohol listed as one of the first few ingredients. There are tons of alcohol and paraben free options on the market, and the one we have on rotation is the Dr. Ci Labo UV Protect Spray 100!

Strategic Sun Protection

Some parts of your body (and face) are more prone to burning, and sun damage. After all, there’s a reason why freckles tend to turn up the most on our shoulders, cheekbones and nose bridge–i.e. the highest points of our bodies!

SPF balms are perfect for that extra protection without the added weight of heavy creams or lotions. For some light layering, we recommend Supergoop’s Glow Stick. Not just for its light formula, but for its out-of-this-world highlight!

The oil-free balm leaves a high-shine glow that shows from under your foundation, creating a truly enviable natural highlight without any of the pore-clogging makeup! At the same time, it moisturises and protects your skin from free radicals–and the sun of course.

We’re serious when it comes to sun protection (if that wasn’t evident enough). So once again load on the lotions and don’t forget to break out your spray-ons because the sun isn’t letting up, and neither are we!

Xoxo,

Kat
