To opt for a ‘traditional’ cheongsam, or a ‘modern’ dress for Chinese New Year?

Being an oldie at heart, my sartorial decision is straightforward: I make an attempt to wear traditional outfits on the first day of celebrations for Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Puasa. Subsequently, I can then choose to opt for more modern pieces for comfort!

If you are undecided on which style to go for, or if you are just looking for CNY-worthy pieces in general, I’ve personally picked some outfits from 3 local brands, and even included comfy footwear options for all that visiting and walking you’ll be doing!

P.S. UOB Cardmembers, you guys get to enjoy additional discounts and deals when you shop with the following brands too! Visit for more deals this Lunar New Year.

Beyond The Vines

Known for their stripped-down, sleek pieces, BTV is the brand to go to for the modern minimalist dresser. Having included auspicious Lunar New Year-appropriate colours in their December and January drops, my top picks from BTV this month will be the red Panelled Tencel Midi Dress, and an upcoming yellow dress with drape detail. What I like about both dresses is that they are great post-CNY outfits too. For work (red) or for a beach getaway (yellow), both options are pieces that speak for themselves.

Lark & Peony

I love a well-made cheongsam (I’m custom-making two for my wedding as we speak), and I love it more when prints and colours are introduced! These 2 Lark & Peony dresses I’ve chosen retain traditional elements like the mandarin collar, but also weave in contrasting fabric choices that make them overall, fun modern-day cheongsams that you can wear even for wedding dinners!

Grey by Ortenhill

For all the walking around and driving to and fro houses, I’ve realised over the years that I prefer comfort over style. Flats are a go-to choice for me when I know I have to visit more than 3 houses a day, and Grey by Ortenhill sandals are a great slip-on-and-go choice! Opt for a gold piece or a neutral beige-toned sandal for easy pairing.

For UOB Cardmembers: $18 off sandals and bags purchases. Promo code: UOBYAY18. Valid till 31 Jan 2020 at and Orchard Gateway #04-15.

ZALORA not only houses your fast-fashion trending pieces, but you can also find retro-looking dresses and CNY-worthy tops for pairing. I picked a brown polka-dotted dress (how cute is this look at the Peranakan restaurant we shot?!) for that 70s throwback vibe and an easy white mandarin-collared top with lace detail which you can pair with a skirt or culottes you already have!

For UOB Cardmembers: 24% off with min. S$100 spend. Promo code: UOBCNY24. Valid till 26 Jan 2020.

That’s it for our CNY-special fashion article! I particularly enjoyed shooting and editing this series, we recce-ed and found some old-school haunts around Joo Chiat which I feel make these CNY outfits even more special. Here’s to more themed shoots in 2020!
