The most wanderlust-y fragrance guide to take you on olfactive journeys.

Probably the most banal tune of this year, but 2020 will always and forever be an odd one. We’re already on the brink of Christmas but my cognisance of the past year seems to have stalled in March. Sometime back, I decided to take one of my empty weekends off to do some packing and found a (positively expired) body mist I wore all the time in junior college (Oh the days of body mists!). While it did give me a rather adverse visceral reaction, I must say olfactive memories are often powerful ones.

If you’ve already hit the stage where you’re starting to plan imaginary holidays… I guess that makes us a party. And I also guess, this guide might take you places. In all seriousness, it’s no news that fragrances are one of most intimate things to select, wear, gift, share and of course, live vicariously through. So here are some of our favourite fragrances for cruising (sensorially) overseas, to accompany your vacay daydreams and every kind of wanderlust.

1. Burberry Her Eau De Parfum, S$151

Smells like: A vibrant metropolis, on foot.

Her is a gourmand dream of candied red and dark berry notes, with a floral heart of violet and jasmine and a woody amber base. It is the young, eclectic pulse of London with its syrupy notes and musky undertones. Hardly delicate, Her leaves a striking, luscious fragrance trail with a hint of powdery smokiness, reminiscent of tripping down bustling city scapes. The travel-friendly hardware is bonus. Its understated and satisfyingly slim form is pretty much made for slipping around and about!

2. Chopard Happy Lemon Dulci Eau De Parfum, S$169

Smells like: Sparkling fields, a day trip.

Happy Lemon Dulci is one of those fragrances that smell exactly as they’re labelled. A hallmark of the Happy Chopard Eaux de Parfums line, Lemon Dulci is a blend of nature’s best mood-lifters and antidepressants. The radiant scent opens with scintillating notes of citrus zest, green leaves and ginger. It eases into a sweet apple bosom, then closes with juicy notes of orange flower water, mango and cucumber. Delightfully bright yet soft, the herby composition is easy to pull-off (a safe bet) and quite literally, a joy to wear.

3. Hermes L’Ombre Des Merveilles Eau De Parfum, S$249

Smells like: A polished jazz lounge, by dusk.

New from the House of Birkin, L’Ombre Des Merveilles by Hermes is a clean, yet intense blend of woody balsamic and oriental notes. The unisex fragrance features a robust crown of black tea, a smoking incense heart and anchored in sensual Tonka bean. Aromatic, slightly spicy and positively seductive. I imagine this being both an immaculate and spellbinding scent on women; made even better by dryer notes in place of honeyed ones. Like silk on leather, a modern classic!

4. Chloé Rose Tangerine Eau de Toilette, S$136

Smells like: The sunrise, from an airplane window side.

A summer signature. Rose Tangerine is a sprightly reinvention of the original Chloé Rose. The fragrance retains Chloe’s classic fresh, clear rose, but parades a modern fruit-inspired twist with vivid tangerine. The beaming composition opens with sunny tangerine and sweet black currant, keeps a heart of rose and anchors itself in warmer cedar with white amber. Bolder but still elegant, Rose Tangerine is an auroral, buoyant blend that sings to having your head in sunlit clouds *wink*!

5. Gucci Bloom Profumo di Fiori, S$184

Smells like: Farmer’s and flower market, on a balmy afternoon.

Another spin on a floral signature, Gucci’s Bloom Profumo di Fiori debuts captivating Tuberose Essence for a more hypnotic version of the original Bloom. Staying true to its floral roots, the charming fragrance opens with jasmine sambac absolute, reveals a soul of creamy tuberose and heady ylang ylang, before closing with aromatic sandalwood, orris concrete and benzoin. Like a heady, heavenly floral cloud, Bloom Profumo di Fiori is also a blend that will wear close to your skin. Perfect for lovers of scents that are graceful, intensely feminine and always unobtrusive.

6. Givenchy Irresistible, S$150

Smells like: A party with bubbly.

Irresistible is another olfactive experience that takes from its name. The floral woody and fruity fragrance is the coming together of naturally alluring notes; featuring an electrifying synthesis of voluptuous rose and sharper blond wood. The concoction is a flirty mix of crisp pear and ambrette top notes, opulent rose essential and iris middle notes, with a powdery base of virginia cedar and musk. Irresistible is a sweet and pillowy scent, with a teasing trail to match. A love song to youth, liberty and escapades!

Take care,
