Cinematography has always been expressing different perspectives, ideas and even looks! As a film lover, I get a lot of my fashion and beauty inspiration from what I watch on the big screen. For instance, when one thinks of blonde hair, ‘Legally Blonde’ comes to mind. 70s’ makeup and hair? That’s ‘Grease’ for you. When it comes to creating memorable characters, makeup and clothes play a huge role in setting the attitude and direction of the film. A particular lip colour could signify maturity, while blue eyeshadow is known to express freedom and fun. So in honour of the Cannes Film Festival happening this month, we share our top 3 beauty moments in recent films/drama series and how you can achieve these iconic movie makeup looks!
The Queen’s Gambit
Everything old is now new, they say. ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ has captured the essence of the 50s’ IT-girl look thanks to the makeup artist, Daniel Parker. Every look donned by Beth Harmon, the main protagonist of the award-winning show, tells a story behind it and it captures the audience’s attention. Of course, the iconic eyeliner look from episode 6 was the talk of the show.
Parker had the intention of creating the look as sloppily as possible to reflect Beth’s mental state and it is a look I am in love with. In an interview with Marie Claire, Parker explained: “Beth gets incredibly drunk while dancing to “I’m Your Venus” by Shocking Blue, and then she does this rather outrageous eyeliner to look like [lead singer] Mariska Veres. So the next day she decides that she’s going to do this makeup again, and does it just incredibly badly.”
This bold look isn’t an everyday wear but we can predict that it will be a popular appearance on Halloween. To channel your inner Beth Harmon, add these products to your cart:
Sephora Collection Sephora x Stabilo Felt EyeLiner
A liquid eyeliner that doesn’t smudge is a must for this look. To draw a steady and smooth eyeliner below the eyes, the Sephora Collection Sephora x Stabilo Felt EyeLiner is the way to go. Effortlessly alternate between thin lines, with its fine and precise tip; or thick lines with its wide beveled edge, for a more dramatic effect.
Burberry Beauty Ultimate Lift Mascara
If you’re lacking in the lash department, the Burberry Beauty Ultimate Lift Mascara is a buildable mascara that creates natural-looking to oversized lashes. Anya Taylor Joy is known for her doll-like eyes and this mascara delivers a similar look for those with sparse and fine lashes.
Nudestix Brow Boost + Set Gel XL Eyebrows
Never miss out on your eyebrows despite a bold eye makeup look. Eyebrows are essential to every look as they frame your face and express your emotions! For easy application, the NudeStix Brow Boost + Set Gel XL has a long-wearing, medium-hold clear gel formulation that grooms and sets your brows in place.
The Crown
Everything about Princess Diana is well-loved by many and it’s pretty obvious why. The late royal family member is known to challenge the status quo and is still an influential figure up till today. Just look at the Italian fashion house, Gucci, who recently reissued the bamboo handle tote that Diana loved back in the 90s’!
The Crown is an absolute must-watch as the drama series nailed the role of Princess Diana in season 4 and I simply can’t get enough of it! Thanks to the makeup and wardrobe team, Olivia Colman described the first time she saw Emma Corrin in costume as Princess Diana: “It’s like the real person had walked in the room.”
The show served us 80s’-inspired moments from Diana donning blue eyeliner to iconic vintage dresses. To achieve the girl-next-door look that is synonymous with Princess Diana, here are the products you might be looking for:
Givenchy Teint Couture City Balm Radiant Perfecting Skin Tint SPF 25
Throughout the first five episodes of ‘The Crown’, makeup artist Cate Hall kept the base natural with no foundation on Emma Corin. However, if your skin needs a little more coverage, you may try applying the Givenchy Teint Couture City Balm for a clean base. It’s an all-rounder skin tint with a 24-hour moisturizer, designed to even out the complexion in transparency and protect the skin against the negative impacts of the urban environment. Psst: It also comes with SPF!
Make Up For Ever Aqua Resist Color Pencil
Another signature moment of Princess Diana was her blue eyeliner. It’s a bold alternative to the classic black liner and needless to say, I’m glad ‘The Crown’ featured the look. Diana chose to apply an electric blue hue to her lower lash line as it accentuates her naturally blue eyes. This trick can be used on almost any eye color! Try an aqua tone for hazel eyes or a deeper blue for brown eyes. For Diana’s trick, try the Make Up For Ever Aqua Resist Color Pencil which comes in 10 colors. Take my words for it when I say that this color pencil from Make Up For Ever is the smoothest and most pigmented color pencil I’ve ever tried.
Sunnies Face Fluffmate In ‘on repeat’
This lightweight formula by Sunnies Face is the perfect choice for the classic Princess Diana look. “She looked amazing in red once in a while, but she looked lovely with a muted, berry mouth,” said Diana’s makeup artist, Mary Greenwell, in an interview with Vogue.
‘The Crown’ adapted Greenwell’s routine on Emma Corin and the Sunnies Face Fluffmate in ‘on repeat’ is the closest shade for her classic berry mouth!
Euphoria
Ah, yes. The American TV series is known for its vibrant set, costumes and makeup. Exploring the idea of trauma, addiction and teenage-hood, Euphoria resonates with the younger crowd like no other. Many are fond of the beauty-related moments from the show, which has also become a huge draw of the series. *Wink*
Euphoria is dramatic and bold — and the makeup is no different. From rhinestone eyebrows to striking eyeshadow colours, it definitely sets itself apart from other coming of age shows. Euphoria’s boundary-pushing makeup can be a little apprehensive for some women so here are some products for a subtle alternative:
Marc Jacobs Eye-conic Multi-finish Eyeshadow Palette
It’s pretty easy to embrace colors in your makeup routine with the Marc Jacobs Eye-conic Multi-finish Eyeshadow Palette. Featuring four fashion finishes: buttery matte velvet, shimmering satin, sparkling silk and, metallic lamé, apply the bold shades as a base to add vibrancy to neutrals, or layer over top for a burst of color.
NudeStix Magnetic Luminous Eye Color
What you’ll love about this product is that you can just use your fingers to blend and you’re good to go. These long-wearing eyeshadow sticks provide intense color, precise lining and primed lids for budge-proof, waterproof wear that lasts up to nine hours. In Euphoria, Rue was rocking glittery purple eyeshadow and the NudeStix Magnetic Matte Eye Color in lilac sky is a muted option for you.
